With over 1600 hours spent playing Battlefield games, I certainly consider myself a big fan of the franchise. Nearly half of that time was spent in Battlefield 3, one of my favorite first-person shooters of all time and the game that BF Studios used as the primary inspiration for Battlefield 6. The other 800 hours are split across the other games in the franchise, from the historic war zones of World War 1 to the tornado-covered playspaces of the year 2042. As someone who has played nearly every game in the franchise (some of the earlier PC entries passed me by because I was a console-only player through my entire childhood), I figured it’d be good to weigh in on one of the hottest debates about Battlefield 6 at the moment: TTK.
In the FPS genre, time-to-kill (and time to death) means everything. Rainbow Six Siege’s lightning-fast TTK means that players need extreme map knowledge and reaction time, while games like Black Ops 4 have had such a long TTK that they were able to introduce a healing mechanic. As for the Battlefield franchise, the series has experienced practically every type of TTK throughout its lifetime, making Battlefield 6’s approach something worth looking at more closely. As it turns out, players would likely be very satisfied with its TTK if it wasn’t for the aforementioned time-to-death (TTD) throwing things off, as it’s essentially a blend of two of the best games in the series.
Battlefield 6’s TTK is Most Like BF3 and BF4, Nothing Like BF1 or 2042
When ranking the major Battlefield games released since BF3, in order from the slowest to fastest TTK, Battlefield 6’s TTK ranks right in the middle of the pack:
- Battlefield 1 (slowest TTK)
- Battlefield 5
- Battlefield 4
- Battlefield 6
- Battlefield 3
- Battlefield 2042 (fastest TTK)
On the high and low ends of the TTK spectrum sit Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 2042. Battlefield 1 is beloved due to its immersive features, unique setting, and bold concepts like the Zeppelin airships, but its TTK isn’t something that many players enjoyed. By far the longest TTK in the franchise, players had to put a fair number of shots into each enemy to secure a kill, and given how slow-firing most of the guns were, it could prove challenging to change kills. On the other hand, Battlefield 2042’s TTK was even more frustrating, as guns were extremely accurate at range due to a lack of spread and recoil while also lacking damage falloff. This made for the fastest TTK in the series, which was too far in the other direction.
With this in mind, it’s good that Battlefield 6 isn’t comparable to 2042 or BF1 in terms of TTK, and it differs from BF5 a bit as well. Players often debate whether BF5 was quicker or slower than BF4 when it comes to TTK, which is a result of multiple changes DICE made to this stat throughout the former’s life cycle, as TTK was quite fast at launch but changed to become significantly longer. Though BF5 guns kill quickly up close, they’re much less reliable at long range, requiring several shots to kill due to extremely high damage falloff. Overall, it’d arguably be closest to BF1, as the whiplash between the long and close-range TTK as well as the various TTK increases throughout the game’s lifespan see the game’s TTK looked at unfavorably today. Fortunately, though BF6 has noticeable damage falloff, said falloff is less severe than BF5 and comparable to the better received Battlefield 4.
Battlefield 4’s TTK numbers and damage profiles were well-liked, even if a majority of the weapons had unpredictable spread and a lack of recoil, leading them to feel similarly inconsistent and slightly raising the TTK higher than it arguably should have been. BF4 was fairly similar to BF3, which in my mind still has it beat in terms of TTK, as weapons felt more unique while the guns killed quickly up close and moderately at long range. BF3’s close-range power can still be felt with guns like the M4A1 in Battlefield 6. However, BF4’s TTK is the closest to BF6’s due to the similar damage falloff as shown by clips like the one below from Reddit user ItzSHFT.
For those curious, Battlefield Hardline’s TTK was very fast and closer to 2042 than anything else. The Bad Company games’ TTK was on the slower end of the spectrum.
Battlefield 6’s Fast TTD is Why Its TTK Feels Too Fast
Statistically, Battlefield 6’s TTK is on par with BF3’s up close and Battlefield 4’s at all other distances, which should be ideal. However, many have still argued that it’s too fast. The reason for this is likely something the franchise has struggled with time and time again: TTD issues. These impacted games like BF5, but were most noticeable in the months following BF4’s infamous launch. When a game’s netcode isn’t ideal, players will find themselves dying behind cover and when it doesn’t even look like they’re being shot. This is because, though the opposing player did indeed shoot them, on the dying player’s end it’s taking too long for the shots to register. This makes a fair outcome feel like anything but, and unfortunately, the TTD in BF6 feels a bit like BF4 in this regard, even if it’s not as severe.
It seems likely that the fast time-to-death (TTD) is the real culprit for the complaints about Battlefield 6 TTK, as it makes gun play feel inconsistent. While players may need to put multiple shots into their foes, it feels as if they’re dying in a split second because all the bullets are hitting them at once. Based on a recent backend patch shared by BF Studios (as shown above), it seems like bullet registration issues may be tied to attachment bugs instead of netcode problems this time around, though it remains to be seen if the fix will be enough for players to feel as if the TTD is fully fair. Ultimately, Battlefield 6’s balanced TTK is being offset by the fast TTD, so hopefully the latter is addressed while the former is left as is. The new game’s TTK reminds me of my favorite entries in the series, but I’d be lying if I said I felt that all my deaths were fair.
