Oda’s Daughter Doubted One Piece Because of This Popular Anime

One Piece never fails to deliver an exciting story with Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates at the center, especially now that they are in Elbaf. The decades-long journey of Luffy continues to impress fans of different ages, whether they are children, teenagers, or working adults. No wonder, Eiichiro Oda’s daughter also came to a point where she began to talk and worry about One Piece, but in her own innocent and charming way.

Apparently, Eiichiro Oda’s daughter once doubted the future of One Piece because of a wildly popular rival anime. Like One Piece, this anime is of the shounen genre, and it has a massive following, with fans supporting the major and minor characters, from watching the anime and reading the manga to buying their merchandise. What is this anime, and why did Oda’s daughter doubt One Piece? Let’s find out.

One Piece Is a Top-Selling Manga Series

One Piece Is One of the Most Successful Manga Series of All Time

  • One Piece could surpass Superman and the Harry Potter series in sales.
  • One Piece is set to break its own records.

It’s been decades since One Piece started serializing, and yet Eiichiro Oda’s magnum opus remains one of the best-selling manga of all time. This won’t change anytime soon, as One Piece still has more opportunities to increase its sales, especially now that Oda has set the Final Saga in motion. No manga series comes close to One Piece in terms of sales, as the manga has sold over 500 million copies worldwide.

It will not be a surprise if One Piece inches closer to or even surpasses the sales records of Western comics like Superman or even the Harry Potter series, with an estimated 600 million copies sold worldwide. Clearly, there’s no stopping One Piece from releasing new content, as Monkey D. Luffy’s great pirate journey is still ongoing, with more years of adventure and storytelling ahead. Some fans estimate One Piece might end in the early 2030s or later, but for now, nothing is concrete.

I don’t want to conquer anything, it’s the one who’s the most free is the pirate king.—Luffy

That said, Eiichiro Oda has truly created a shounen manga series that stands in a league of its own. It’s not just the manga series that has become a commercial and cultural juggernaut, but also the anime adaptation, which brought the characters to life. On top of that, the One Piece live-action has been successful, and its second season would only fuel its global reach.

Eiichiro Oda’s Daughter Doubted One Piece Because of My Hero Academia

Oda’s Daughter Was Worried About the Future of One Piece

  • Eiichiro Oda’s daughter asked him if the One Piece manga was really okay because of MHA.
  • My Hero Academia is also a highly successful manga and anime series.

Eiichiro Oda isn’t shy when it comes to his daughter and her thoughts about One Piece in interviews. In fact, Oda once revealed in an interview that his daughter liked the Osomatsu-san anime, which eventually inspired the change in Vinsmoke Sanji’s number of siblings. Also, he even admitted that one of his daughter’s favorite characters in One Piece when she was growing up was Nami, and then Boa Hancock.

This time, in a 2018 interview Eiichiro Oda did with My Hero Academia’s creator Kohei Horikoshi, which a popular One Piece fan page shared on X (formerly Twitter), Oda revealed that his daughter got worried about the future of the One Piece manga because of My Hero Academia. Funny, her classmates were singing the theme song of My Hero Academia on the school bus, which led her to ask Oda, “Dad, is your manga really okay?”

This charming reaction proves that Eiichiro Oda was not immune to the honest worries of his daughter even though One Piece has cemented itself in the industry. This also proves how impactful My Hero Academia had become at the time. The fact that the kids were enthusiastically singing the theme song of My Hero Academia speaks volumes about its popularity.

One Piece Is Still at the Top of the Ranks

While My Hero Academia is one of the most popular anime of all time, One Piece is still laps ahead of the race in terms of manga sales, viewership, and overall market demand. However, it would be wrong to disregard My Hero Academia’s influence, as it has carved its own legacy in modern shounen storytelling. Besides, there came a point in time when My Hero Academia briefly surpassed One Piece in manga sales back in 2024.

However, My Hero Academia is nowhere near the number of copies sold by One Piece. It has over 100 million copies sold worldwide, compared to the numbers owned by One Piece. Eiichiro Oda’s manga series also continues to perform strongly, leaving My Hero Academia behind in terms of market impact, especially now that the manga has concluded.
