The Pokemon TCG has officially revealed three exciting new Mega Pokemon coming to the game in Ascended Heroes, with one looking poised to break the game’s meta wide open. The newest era of the beloved trading card game based on the monster-catching franchise has seen plenty of exciting new additions, including the newest main gameplay mechanic. The release of Mega Evolution brought the titular mechanic back to the Pokemon TCG for the first time since 2016, with the powerful Pokemon giving three prizes when knocked out. Now, the next big Pokemon set looks to be a mash-up of the TCG’s recent hits.

Ascended Heroes is set to be the first official product releasing for the Pokemon TCG in 2026, with lots to be excited about in the expansion. The Pokemon Company has already teased multiple new Mega Pokemon coming with Ascended Heroes, including Mega Dragonite ex as the set’s cover Pokemon. The expansion was also confirmed to be adding more Stellar Tera Pokemon, Owner’s Pokemon, and even another brand-new rarity being introduced with Mega Attack Rare cards. A new reveal from Ascended Heroes is now showing off a trio of iconic Mega Pokemon from the Pokemon franchise’s most recent video game.

Pokemon TCG Adding Powerful New Mega Starter Pokemon

The Pokemon Company teased three new Mega Pokemon releasing with Ascended Heroes, showcasing the Starter Mega Evolutions from Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Mega Meganium ex will look to be a powerful endgame option for Grass decks’ typical strategy of Energy acceleration, with its damage spiking when more Energies are attached. Mega Emboar ex provides some powerful damage for players at a significant cost, able to deal a base 320 damage while hitting itself for 60 damage as recoil. Mega Feraligatr ex could be the most powerful of the bunch, however, with an attack that grows immensely powerful when attacking damaged foes.

Mega Feraligatr ex will likely slot in nicely with several pre-existing strategies, potentially being the most powerful of the trio in the TCG. Mega Feraligatr will boast strong synergy with the Munkidori card from Twilight Masquerade, which allows players to move damage counters from their own Pokemon onto their opponent’s. The potential for Mega Feraligatr to deal 400 damage would be some of the highest damage numbers normally attainable in the Pokemon TCG, able to easily one-hit KO any Pokemon in the game. The Mega Feraligatr could also pair well with the Baxcalibur card originally released in Paldea Evolved, able to quickly accelerate energy to pay for Feraligatr’s attack. The Pokemon TCG‘s Ascended Heroes expansion is scheduled to release on January 30.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game Has Lots in Store for 2026

Ascended Heroes looks to be a major game-changer for the Pokemon TCG to kick off 2026, with plenty more powerful cards on the way. Charizard will receive a brand-new Mega Evolution in Ascended Heroes, following the debut of Mega Charizard X in Phantasmal Flames with a Mega Charizard Y card. The previously-mentioned Mega Dragonite ex will offer a powerful and versatile Ability, allowing players to switch out their Active Pokemon for free once per turn. Popular Supporter card Boss’s Orders will also receive a new printing within Ascended Heroes, featuring new artwork of Pokemon Legends: Z-A antagonist Corbeau and ensuring the card remains in the game’s Standard format.

While the Pokemon TCG has not revealed much of its plans for 2026 beyond Ascended Heroes, The Pokemon Company likely has lots in store throughout the year. 2026 is expected to kick off the festivities for Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary, with the series celebrating three decades since the release of the original video games in Japan. The card game is already rumored to be bringing back a popular Pokemon TCG product from the game’s 25th anniversary, with rumors about a new version of the “First Partner Pack” focused on the Starter Pokemon from each region. Pokemon fans should have no shortage of exciting announcements in store as the franchise gears up for one of its biggest anniversary celebrations yet.
