Wizards of the Coast is giving fans a first look at six of the new cards coming with Magic: the Gathering‘s upcoming Spider-Man “Universes Beyond” set, releasing later this year. The massively popular trading card game has experimented multiple times throughout the years with bringing different popular media franchises into the game. Magic has featured crossover sets and cards based on everything from video games like Fallout and Assassin’s Creed to pop culture staples like Doctor Who. However, 2025 is set to bring about a major change to Magic‘s crossover cards.

Magic: the Gathering officially revealed a major change to how the developer will handle its “Universes Beyond” sets late last year, confirming they would be Standard-legal for the first time. The change is set to begin this summer with the release of the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy expansion and will continue to future sets as well. Magic: the Gathering had previously limited its crossover content to formats like “Modern” and the fan-favorite “Commander” format. Now, another massively-hyped “Universes Beyond” expansion is seeing its first reveals.

Magic: The Gathering’s 2025 release schedule and legality were shifted, and the remaining in-universe sets may undergo a controversial change.

As reported by IGN, Wizards of the Coast has officially revealed some of the first cards from Magic: the Gathering‘s Spider-Man set. The collection of cards features four “Legendary Creature” cards, with Spider-Man joined by three of his most recognizable villains in Venom, Doc Ock, and the Green Goblin. Each card looks to boast their own unique playstyle, including Spider-Man using stun counters to draw cards, Doc Ock turning Artifacts into Creatures, and Green Goblin getting +1/+1 counters and creating Treasure Tokens when discarding cards. The reveal also shows the “borderless” art for each card, with all six cards combining to form a scene of Spidey battling the iconic villains.

  • (Tap), Discard two cards: Draw three cards, then put a fuse counter on this artifact. It deals damage equal to the number of fuse counters on it to target opponent. They gain control of this artifact.

Alongside the legendary hero and villains, the initial reveal also shows off two more cards that can turn the tides of a game. The Doc Ock-themed “Grasping Tentacles” Sorcery causes an opponent to mill eight cards before taking an Artifact from their graveyard to the player’s battlefield. “Pumpkin Bombs” lets players trigger Green Goblin’s discard effect by discarding two cards and drawing three, also dealing damage to an opponent and handing over control of the card. Magic: the Gathering’s Spider-Man Universes Beyond expansion is scheduled to release on September 26.

Spider-Man‘s first reveals are not the first time Wizards of the Coast has teamed up with Marvel for an array of new cards. Magic: the Gathering debuted a Marvel-themed “Secret Lair” drop near the end of 2024, including cards based on iconic heroes like Captain America, Storm, and Black Panther. Wizards of the Coast has also revealed the next Universes Beyond set after Spider-Man, with Nickelodeon’s Avatar the Last Airbender set to be brought into the card game. Magic: the Gathering looks set to carry on with its new Universes Beyond initiative with Spider-Man‘s debut.
