The upcoming release of Fallout 76‘s Burning Springs update will mark a bittersweet moment in the game’s roller coaster of a life. After going strong for 7 years, Fallout 76 has seen its fair share of highs and lows, which players who have stuck around since the game’s tumultuous 2018 launch are well aware of. However, an unfortunate part of Fallout 76‘s live-service model is the occasional need to retire certain pieces of content, and Milepost Zero is latest to be on its way out the door.
For the most part, it’s an exciting time to be a Fallout 76 fan, with the recently announced Burning Springs update claiming to be the game’s biggest yet. In this update, players can expect to explore a brand-new part of the map set in Ohio, and meet an in-game version of the Fallout TV show’s iconic Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, who will reprise his role as the character’s voice in Fallout 76. Burning Springs won’t be all sunshine and roses, as players will have to say goodbye to Milepost Zero in Skyline Valley, leaving the fate of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company up in the air.
Fallout 76 Players Won’t Be Able to Access Milepost Zero for Much Longer
Released just over a year ago in September 2024, Fallout 76‘s Milepost Zero update added the titular location along with a new Caravan: Skyline Drive public event. This event required players to escort a brahmin caravan through the perils of Skyline Valley, potentially pitting players against powerful foes like the Blue Devil and Ouga cryptids. Apparently, the Blue Ridge Caravan Company has deemed this region to be too dangerous for their operations, and is closing Milepost Zero as a result.
A major part of Milepost Zero’s gameplay was earning Supplies to recruit new crew members and upgrade the location. Recruitable NPCs in Milepost Zero include:
- Axel – Decorator
- Gyro – Sentry Bot
- Ineke – Imported Goods Merchant
- Josie – Brahmin Tamer
- Theodore – Ammo Merchant
An unfortunate side effect of Milepost Zero being removed from Fallout 76 is that players who invested in upgrading the location, recruiting NPCs, and decorating it to their liking will have their hard work undone. Currently, there hasn’t been word on what will happen to Caravan events across the game.
Milepost Zero is Going the Way of Fallout 76’s Nuclear Winter Update
Fallout 76 is no stranger to certain pieces of content being removed with new updates. While some smaller features like specific weapons or events that have been retired may not change the game significantly, removing entire game modes is a huge blow to Fallout 76‘s multiplayer content. The Nuclear Winter update is the most obvious victim of this practice, as the headlining features it introduced, like the battle royale Nuclear Winter mode and Vault Raids, have since been removed from the game entirely.
Nuclear Winter was added in June 2019, and was removed in September 2021 due to low player counts. Milepost Zero will have lasted even less time than this mode, being retired just over a year after it was added.
There is Still Some Hope for Milepost Zero Fans in Fallout 76’s Burning Springs Update
Comments made by Fallout 76‘s developers suggest that some elements of Milepost Zero will migrate over to Highway Town, a new location being added in the Burning Springs update. Interestingly, Windy Park is mentioned as the primary NPC moving to Highway Town despite never being released in the live version of the game. Windy was available as a recruitable vendor for Milepost Zero in Fallout 76‘s PTR until November 15, 2024, when she was removed entirely and never re-enabled.
It’s possible that Windy will debut in the Burning Springs update as a one-stop shop for all the NPC merchants that were previously part of Milepost Zero. With Burning Springs hitting the PTR on October 2, players can get a good idea of what to expect from the full update. However, players will want to take advantage of Milepost Zero while they still can before it is removed when Burning Springs officially launches in December 2025.
