Assassin’s Creed Shadows creative director Jonathan Dumont has confirmed that Ubisoft is “actively looking at” tougher difficulty options in the popular RPG. With many players already beating Assassin’s Creed Shadows, some have asked for more difficulty options for subsequent playthroughs.
Despite a bumpy road to release, including several delays, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is finally in the hands of gamers, receiving positive reviews from critics, too. Just over a week after its release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows hit the 3-million-player milestone, confirming that the strong word-of-mouth surrounding the game was having a strong effect on player numbers. It also holds the series’ record on Steam for the most concurrent players, a good sign for Ubisoft given its need for a big hit.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Has a Clear and Dominant Theme
Assassin’s Creed Shadows story takes players on a brand-new journey through Japan, but its core theme will likely be very familiar for many players.
Speaking to GamesRadar+ at the 2025 Game Developer’s Conference, Assassin’s Creed Shadows creative director Jonathan Dumont confirmed that Ubisoft is “actively looking at” adding “a tougher setting for difficulty for some of our players… How challenging do you want it? But we’re looking at these things and monitoring what people say about the game.” This could be great for players taking part in subsequent playthroughs of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, even if their first ones are using the default settings.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Could Get More Difficulty Options in the Future
The difficulty in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is already pretty customizable. There are four default options: Story, Forgiving, Normal, and Expert. Beyond this, players get access to a Difficulty Tuning setting, where they can manually change combat and stealth settings for their own playthrough. However, players wanting a real challenge can only tweak so much until the difficulty caps out. For these players, Dumont’s comments will come as great news, although there’s no timeline for the addition of these tougher difficulty options, if they do come at all.
Beyond more difficulty options, there’s still plenty for Assassin’s Creed Shadows fans to look forward to. Prior to the game’s launch, Assassin’s Creed Shadows revealed details about its Claws of Awaji DLC, with the first expansion providing over 10 hours and a new region for players to explore. No release date has yet been given for the Claws of Awaji expansion.
